On Sunday, July 2, 1961, 61 gathered at the old Jonesboro Elementary School for the formation of a new Baptist church in Jonesborough. Cate Memorial Baptist Church was the name chosen on Sunday, July 9, 1961, for the new church. On Sunday, July 19, 1961, the group “voted to purchase the proposed 3.2 acre lot near Freeman’s Corner. ... Also voted to change our name to West Hills Baptist Church.” (Copied from the July 23, 1961, bulletin) West Hills Baptist Church was formally constituted into a church on Sunday, July 30, 1961. A group of 50 (photo above) participated in the “ground-breaking service” on Sunday afternoon, August 27, 1961. Our first service in the new building was Sunday, November 12, 1961.
